Coming out.
Coming out the closet was hard for me, mostly because my sister was a bitch and thought it’d be funny to lock the closet, thus keeping me locked in there with nothing to eat but my shoes.Seriously though, when I told my mum I was gay she basically said “are you sure?” to which I replied ‘yes’ as at 18 I was quite sure I liked penis, and then she decided to do the ironing for about 3 hours.See, when my mum is stressed or anxious, she’ll iron. We weren’t poor, but I don’t think there are many homes that hold enough clothes to spend 3 hours ironing, so I’m pretty sure she spent an hour ironing clothes and the rest of the time ironing the tiles and her feelings. She had a lot of feelings.
Mum told my Dad the following day even though I told her I’d tell him, she loves being the first to tell people things. Dad was fine with it, he’d probably hold up a gay pride flag if I asked him too.The question I most commonly get asked is “When did you know you were gay” to which I usually respond with “When did you know you were straight?” - you don’t know when, you just ARE - although, if I could pinpoint the time I thought to myself “maybe I’m gay” was when I thought holding my hands up above my head when running would dry my nail polish quicker than under a fan.
I haven’t had any bad experiences since coming out, if anything it’s helped my social life. I have more straight male friends as a gay man then I did as a closeted gay man and I have more female friends that I could poke a (limp) stick at, cause I’m the token gay. Sometimes I’m also the token white friend too. I was going to write more to this story, but I’ve been interrupted by laziness.
